A man from St. John's cashed in at an international poker tournament earlier this month, snatching the top prize and more than $1-million in winnings.

Mike Watson won the main event at the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas in January.

Watson, 31, walked away from the table with $738,245 (USD) — or just over $1-million in Canadian currency.

He beat out a field of more than 900 poker players in the tournament. In a post-win interview with PokerNews.com, he said it was an amazing victory.

'It's a big one for me. Anytime you win a main event with such a big field it definitely has a little bit of a special feeling,' Watson said.

'[It's] definitely a day where I'd love to say that I outplayed everyone ... but really the cards just fell my way.'

Watson, or 'SirWatts' as he's known online, starting playing behind the computer but has been regular on the live poker scene for more than a decade.

He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in math, and now calls Toronto home.

This win puts Watson's overall career earnings at roughly $9-million.
